What do you think?

Have you followed the Miss USA 'scandal' this week? If you haven't read or watched anything regarding this story, click here

I am curious as to what your opinion on this issue is. I will accept any and all opinions. The way I see it, one can view this issue in many different ways.

1. Agree with Miss California's answer and applaud her for sticking to her values.
2. Disagree with Miss California's answer and think she is horrible for feeling the way she does.
3. Think it's stupid that such a controversial question was posed where there is no right answer. Either way you are screwed. Some of America will be offended, some of America will be thrilled, and the rest of us will think it's unfair that she got asked that while others probably got to talk about world hunger and how horrible it is. That's not debatable is it?

Bet you can guess which one of those is my opinion?! What's yours?

Before you tell me your opinion, I get to share mine. You can't win arguments with people regarding politics, religion, abortion, and homosexuality. Am I forgetting any? Both sides feel passionately about their opinion. Many from both sides try to change other people's minds. Do people really think that they can shove enough of their own beliefs down other people's throats to get them to, say, change from liberal to conservative or pro-life to pro-choice? If someone disagrees with you does that make them wrong, dumb, uneducated, or inferior? Who is to say both sides don't have merit?

This is one of my pet peeves in life, fyi. (Like you couldn't guess) Just a little Thursday evening food for thought!

I was actually watching the show and she sort of stummbled around the question at first and then went with her answer. I'm sorry "Perez", but you asked her opinion and she gave it. I, personally, don't agree with her but atleast she answered the question.
What peed me off was when "Perez" went on a media rampage saying how she should have answered the question more ambiguously (sp???). It's like HELLO! you asked her her opinion!

I don't know what rock I have been hiding under, but this is the first I had heard of it, so I read the link you sent and then watched the interview portion of the pagent online. I think you're number 3 hits the mark. It was a lose lose situation for her.

Hey Bonnie, I'm a huge fan of your blog and I just thought I'd throw you a comment. I agree with your opinion that winning arguments about religion and abortion is nearly impossible, however I don't think that gay marriage or the Miss California controversy is as simple as that. I don't think there is a problem with the question as far as fairness is concerned, especially for someone from a state that recently overturned a gay marriage bill such as California. I think that because her answer seemed to be based out of ignorance and was worded very poorly she came off sounding like an idiot. Also, in my experience the majority of anti gay marriage advocates seem to base their opinions out of ignorance or religion, which by the way is not how government works. The thing that makes the gay marriage issue so tricky is that, yes everyone is entitled to their own opinions, however in this case a certain side of the issue is infringing on the other's civil rights.

Thanks Bonnie, hope to see you soon!
Love, CDR
